Questions

Ask us anything.

Everything we get asked, in one place. Search it, or have a scroll.

Tickets & getting in
Do I need a ticket?

Yes, but it's free. Every person needs their own — including kids.

Can I still get a ticket?

We're sold out — 1,600 spots gone. Get on the waitlist though: spots do come back when people can't make it.

Where's my QR code?

In the email we sent when you booked — search your inbox for “Big Aussie BBQ”. We'll also send it again two days before, and once more on the morning.

Still can't find it? Send yourself another copy — pop in your email address and we'll fire your tickets straight back.

Screenshot it before you leave home. A few thousand of us will be sharing one cell tower and you don't want to be loading an email at the desk.

Can my whole group use one code?

No — everyone in your booking has their own QR code, kids included. We scan each one at the desk.

I can't find my ticket at all

Send yourself a fresh copy — enter your email address and we'll email your tickets back to you.

Or just come to the check-in desk and we'll look you up. It's not a drama.

I can't make it any more

You can cancel or change your booking yourself — put in your email address, we'll send your tickets over, and you can sort it from there.

Do it as soon as you can and your spot goes to someone on the waitlist. There are a lot of people who'd love it.

Where exactly do I check in?

Down the ramp from the Pavilion. It's the first thing you'll come to and it's marked on the map.

What time does it start and finish?

We kick off at 12pm and wrap up at 5pm. Last drinks are called at 4pm.

Can I turn up late?

Of course. Just make sure you've checked in by 3pm if you want to be in the Qantas draw — and that you're still here at 4pm, which is when we hand the tickets over.

Money
How much does it cost?

Nothing to get in. You only pay for what you eat and drink.

Can I pay with cash?

No — card and Apple Pay only, everywhere. Not at the bar, not at the food stalls. Don't bother going to an ATM.

Food & drink
What food is there?

Snags off the BBQ on real white bread, Bourke Street Bakery pies and rolls, Boomerang Bites, Van Leeuwen scoops, COBS Bread, and Bluestone Lane coffee.

The menu screen has the lot, with prices and where each one is.

Is there vegan food?

Yes. Vegan snags off the BBQ, and Bourke Street have a mini vegan pie and a half vegan roll.

Is there gluten free food?

Yes — a gluten free snag in gluten free bread, same price as the others.

Can I bring my own food?

Please do. Bring a picnic and a rug and make a day of it — just leave room for a snag.

Can I bring my own alcohol?

No. It's a public park and we'd lose the permit. Non-alcoholic drinks are fine to bring.

The bar's got Coopers beer, Living Roots wine, NON, and Four Pillars G&Ts.

How do I buy a drink?

Bring an official government photo ID showing you're over 21 and you'll get a red wristband at check-in. No wristband, no drink.

Alcohol has to stay in the bar area — that's the permit, not us being precious.

Is there coffee?

Bluestone Lane are on site — flat white, espresso, cold brew and matcha.

Where do I get water?

Free water at the Health Station, bottled water at the bar for $2, and there's a park bubbler marked on the map.

The Qantas draw
How do I go in the Qantas draw?

Check in at the desk by 3pm and you're in automatically. You don't need to be standing anywhere in particular when we draw it — we draw at 3, then come and find you.

You do need to still be here at 4pm though. That's when we hand the tickets over, and you have to be there to claim them — if we can't find you, we draw another name.

You'll also need to be 18 or over and a legal resident of the 50 US states or DC.

What do you actually win?

Two return Economy flights from the USA to Australia, with Qantas.

Conditions apply — travel dates, availability and the usual fare rules. We'll go through the details with the winner on the day.

When is the draw?

Drawn at 3pm, and the tickets are handed over at 4pm from the band tent. You need to be here for the 4pm bit.

What if I'm not there when it's drawn?

That's fine — you don't have to be anywhere in particular at 3pm. As long as you'd checked in by then you're in it, and we'll come and find you between 3 and 4.

Being here at 4pm is the bit that matters. That's when we present the tickets, and you have to be there to claim them.

If we can't find you, or you've gone home before 4, we draw another name. So don't slip off early — it's two flights to Australia.

What are the Qantas draw terms and conditions?

No purchase necessary. Open to registered attendees 18+ who are legal residents of the 50 US states or DC. Winner drawn at 3:00pm and must be present to claim.

Prize: 2 return economy Qantas flights, no upgrades, awarded and fulfilled directly by Qantas, who will contact the winner regarding tax reporting. Flights are available from select airports at select times as outlined to recipient in Qantas Terms & Conditions.

All terms and conditions are subject to the discretion of Qantas and America Josh.

The AWNY raffle
Is there a raffle?

Yes — run by Australian Women in New York, and separate from the Qantas flights. Tickets start at $5 and every dollar goes to AWNY's community programs.

Buy tickets here. You can do it from your phone in the park.

What can I win in the raffle?

A RATIONALE skincare set worth $703, a $500 Camilla voucher with a private styling session and a clutch, a Glasshouse basket, an Othership five-class pack, Bluey packs, Aussie wine, a slab of Bondi Lager, signed books and a fair bit more.

Have a look at the lot — there are around twenty prizes.

How much are raffle tickets?

$5 for one, $10 for three, $20 for eight, $50 for twenty, or $100 for fifty.

Paid online through RallyUp, so it's card only — same as everything else today.

When does the raffle close?

Ticket sales stop at 3:30pm and it's drawn at 4pm.

Do I have to be there for the raffle draw?

No. Buy a ticket and go home if you like — winners are contacted by email.

Prizes are picked up in NYC afterwards, so you don't need to carry anything home from the park.

Where does the raffle money go?

Straight to Australian Women in New York — a volunteer-run organisation that connects and supports Aussie women across the city. They also run the kids' corner today.

What's on
Is there live music?

Three sets at the band tent: Amelia Cormack and Jenn Reed from the Australian Theatre Festival at 12:30, The DownUnders at 1:15, and Ben Butler and Sam Hawksley at 2:30.

There's more on the lineup over on the blog.

What competitions are there?

The Thong Toss Championship from 2 to 2:30 on the lawn, and the Weet-Bix Eating Competition at 3:30 at the band tent. Junior and senior divisions in both, trophies by Altrum.

What can I do all afternoon?

Backyard cricket, footy and cornhole on the lawn, all rolling — jump in whenever. Bring your own bat or ball if you like.

Or just sit and enjoy the day surrounded by familiar accents, with great music.

What's the Stain Clinic?

Prue Linehan from New New Patch, 1–3pm. Bring a clean, dry, 100% cotton kids' garment (ages 3+) and she'll cover a stain with a peel-and-stick patch on the spot.

No sewing, no ironing, no appointment. Walk-ins only.

I'm coming on my own — will that be weird?

Not even slightly. There's a Meet a New Friend corner running all day for exactly this, and half the point of the barbie is meeting people.

What's the Health Station?

Free Aussie essentials, open all day, powered by Cigna — sunscreen, water, fly spray, and Berocca and Vegemite from Treats from Oz.

Kids & family
Is it good for kids?

It's built for them. There's a kids' corner with games, a playground attached to the venue, and a lot of lawn to run it out of them.

Can I bring a pram?

Yes. The park is step-free from the street and the paths are sealed, so you'll get around fine.

Do kids need their own ticket?

Yes — everyone in the booking gets their own QR code, whatever their age.

On the day
What should I bring?

Hat, sunscreen, a picnic rug, any food you fancy, non-alcoholic drinks, and your own games. Photo ID if you're planning to drink.

Leave the BYO alcohol and the cash at home — neither is any use here.

Is there shade?

Limited, on the lawn. It's August in New York, so bring a hat and sunscreen — and there's free sunscreen at the Health Station if you forget.

What happens if the weather turns?

It's an outdoor event. If anything changes on the day we'll say so here and on @americajosh.

Are there toilets?

Plenty, in the park amenities block, and they're marked on the map. There's an accessible one too.

Is the venue accessible?

The park is step-free from the street and the paths are sealed. There's an accessible toilet marked on the map.

If you need a hand with anything — a seat in the shade, a clearer route, a quieter spot — find a volunteer.

How do I get there?

Rockefeller Park, on the Hudson in Battery Park City. Closest subway is Chambers St (1, 2, 3, A, C) — then walk west toward the water, about ten minutes.

There's a full getting-here guide on the main site, and the map screen has a Google Maps pin.

Can I drive and park?

You can, but you won't enjoy it. Parking down here is grim and expensive. Take the train.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, dogs are welcome. Just keep an eye on them — it's a busy lawn with a lot of food at nose height.

Can I smoke or vape?

No — no smoking and no vaping anywhere on site.

Why is my phone so slow?

A few thousand of us are sharing one cell tower. This page keeps working once it's loaded, so it's worth opening it before you arrive.

Help
Who do I ask if something goes wrong?

Any volunteer — we're the ones in lanyards — or the check-in desk, which doubles as the info desk all day.

Is there first aid?

There's no first aid officer on site. The Health Station has sunscreen, water and fly spray, and any volunteer will help you sort something out.

For anything serious, call 911 — we're a short walk from the street.

I've lost something

Check-in desk. That's where anything handed in ends up.

Where do I put my rubbish?

Take it with you if you can. The park's lent to us for the day and we'd like it back next year.

Who puts this on?

America Josh, with a crew of volunteers, presented by Qantas and supported by a long list of partners. Free, family-friendly, and proudly volunteer-run.

Is there anything else on during the year?

Plenty. America Josh runs Aussie things all over the country, not just this one — have a look at what's coming up.

The easiest way to hear about one near you is to get on the list. Wherever in the States you've ended up, something turns up eventually.

Still stuck

Grab any volunteer on the day — we're the ones in lanyards — or give us a shout.
